Travelling to a new city always means a lot of photo ops, but there’s something about certain monuments that makes us throw originality out the door. We’re not saying cliché has to mean the picture isn’t a good one, we’re all for finding interesting ways to pose with an inanimate object, but we still wonder how these overused poses got their start?
Check out some of the world’s most cliché travel pictures below and a few monuments that still don’t have their own must take shot.
Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal in Agra, India is undeniably impressive and awe-inspiring, maybe because of this the cliché pic is always trying to hold it in between your fingers.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa in Pisa, Italy is doing just that, leaning, so of course the must take picture is to pretend that you’re the preventing it from crashing to the ground.
Abbey Road
Crossing Abbey Road like the Beatles did back in 1969…
Pyramids of Giza
Just outside of Cairo, Egypt are the Pyramids of Giza, which thousands of tourists flock to and just can’t miss out on the opportunity to have the Khufu and Khafre pyramids at their fingertips.
The Great Sphinx of Giza
The Pyramids of Giza complex outside of Cairo has not one, but two, cliché photo opportunities. The sphinx in Egyptian mythology is treacherous and merciless, the legend saying that anyone that cannot answer her riddle will be killed and eaten. Guess those that decide to kiss the sphinx didn’t hear that part…
The Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France is one of the world’s most valuable monuments and also one of the most photographed. We don’t have the exact numbers, but we’re guessing out of all the pictures of the Eiffel Tower, this one repeats itself many times.
Prague Castle guards
Castle guards are required to keep a straight face, so as responsible tourists it’s our duty to try to make them try to crack the stern façade. Unlike other castle guards, at the Prague Castle in the Czech Republic the guards are out in the public and have turned into a popular photo opp.
Salar de Uyuni
The Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia is the world’s largest salt flat and a great place to turn your pictures into optical illusions. If you want to add your picture to the long list of typical pictures for visitors of the salt flat you cannot forget to jump!
And going along those lines, there are many monuments that still haven’t developed their own cliché pose, so when all else fails, tourists around the world decide to just jump.
Stonehenge
At Stonehenge in Wiltshire England the best way to bring a bit of fun to an ancient ring of stones is to jump!
The Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in New York most likely won’t smile for the picture, so a jumping pose will have to do to make the shot a little less serious.
The Sagrada Familia
What other pose would be appropriate for outside the Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona, Spain? The late architect, Antoni Gaudi might have done the same himself.
Buckingham Palace
And last, but not least, how else would you pose with a palace? Since the Buckingham Palace doesn’t have the Queen’s Guard out in the open like at Prague Castle, the next best thing to trying to make a guard smirk is a jump we suppose.
