  3. Hoping to finish reading the Hunger Games trilogy this holiday before Mockingjay 2 is released in cinemas.

  4. I’m trying to catch up with some old classics so I’ll probably go for something like Wuthering Heights or The Grapes of Wrath.

  5. I will be reading Ronald Dahl since we got a whole series for my son. Will be great to come back to childhood

  6. I loved reading Notes From An Exhibition by Patrick Gale so I’d really like to delve into another Patrick Gale book such as A Perfectly Good Man. I have a Kindle but I still prefer the feel of a proper hardback book.

  7. I tend to “easy read” when on holiday, to enable me to totally relax, generally something lighthearted and funny! Although in saying that I do love a John Grisham!!

  8. I’ll be reading You Will Never Find me by Robert Wilson as I’ve heard good things about it.

  9. I will be reading fifty shades of grey as haven’t read it yet, but enjoy any romances as long as they are gripping and enjoyable

  10. I treat myself to something I’ve wanted for a while in the airport bookshop but I also fill my case with books bought at charity shops before I travel – and leave them for others to enjoy rather than bring them home

  11. Survey all completed!
Fingers crossed for some vouchers…. i can get myself a new guidebook to go with my next trip then!

  12. I would never go anywhere without a paper travel guide. They are worth every penny and great for learning about the place you are travelling through during journeys and hotel pit stops!

  13. Looking at hiking the Appalachian Trail so I’m going to be reading a lot of books and blogs about it!

  14. I always start the holiday reading magazines to persuade my brain to relax, then I like to move on to the latest Harlan Coben or Linwood Barclay

  15. I usually take a few different books; a mix of some crime and some lighter ‘brain candy’ for when I’m lazing about.

  16. I’d like to read Wicked on holiday. Or my husband keeps nagging me to read the Shannara books by Terry Brooks.

  17. Holidays are the time to catch up on the reading that often takes a back seat whilst working! The latest Patrick Gale lies waiting to accompany the next trip!

  20. I love reading Sci-Fi / Fantasy while I’m in the coffee shops in Amsterdam, or maybe on the beach on a nice day.

  22. My problem is finding enough room in the suitcase for a spare pair of knickers and a toothbrush once I have packed all the books. One for my desert island would have to be Jane Austin.

  23. I’ve just been away and managed to get through 11 books – highlight of every holiday is a chance to devour some books!

  24. I normally read the inflight magazines and latest books like 50 shades of grey or harry potter books

  26. I would love to read Angels and demons! I know Im a bit behind in getting around to it, but my missus recommends it, so I think that’s what I’d choose to read 🙂 X

  27. The first read of my time away will be A Wizard of Earthsea, which has accompanied me in one form or another for the last 10 years!

  28. I like DK Guides, when visiting somewhere new. I’m currently reading the “Outlander” series, by Diana Gabaldon.

  33. I like to see what other holiday makers have left behind in the hotel “library” and find some little gems to read!

  34. I like to take a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. This year I have Donna Tart’s “The Goldfish”, David Nicholls “Us” and Karen Joy Fowler’s “We are all completely beside ourselves” downloaded on the Kindle and am looking for my non-fiction – a couple of biographies would be good.

  35. I love a three book saga and I am currently reading Raymond Feist Shadow of a Dark Queen – and its a 4 book set – so happy days, I would hate to be without a book, so I take my Kindle as well….

  36. I often get books as birthday/Christmas presents that can keep me going all year without having to buy a book myself.
I will be reading 100 Acts of Minor Dissent by Mark Thomas

  37. I love to escape with a good book – a holiday is a great excuse to read, read, read and not feel guilty about it! I will be taking David Nicholls’ ‘Us’ on my next break.

  38. Great website. First family holiday abroad booked through them. Can’t wait to relax and read my books, especially the latest from the hilarious Marian Keyes!

  39. I will be reading No Safe House by Linwood Barclay. If you haven’t discovered this author yet I highly recommend. By the way..the survey here only takes 2 mins to complete.

  40. I’ve never used a kindle or digital device to read books on holiday! Would everyone recommend them? I’m quite traditional and like the experience of having the book.

  41. Hi. I’m reading 500 mile walk is, a great tail about a mand and his dog walking the South west coastal path

  42. Some good questions there. Mostly I enjoy auto/biography and fiction. Learnng from other peoples lives and getting away from the world of work, but I interpsperse that with learning about the living world and how we can better help manage it sustainably

  43. I only have time to read on holiday so I do lots of research on books first to make sure it is really worth reading!! I love to read lots of different boos, fiction and non-fiction, but being transported to an exotic place with fantastic characters is simply the best! Happy reading everyone, an always make the most of every minute of your holiday xx

  44. I enjoying reading paperbacks but lately i’ve been considering buying a kindle purely to save up room in my hand luggage. Might add it to my xmas wish list! 🙂

  45. Love autobiographies and it’s always great to read a book based on the place you are visiting….

  46. I recommend reading novels that are set in the country that you’re visiting. It helps set the scene and can give a great insite into the country. e.g. Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy while in India, or Carlos Ruiz Zafron’s Shadow of the Wind while in Barcelona.

  47. I will be reading ALL the Susan Hill books as she is a truly divine writer. The survey didnt include enough options eg There was more than one option i could have ticked but you were only given one option to tick . Thanks

  48. I’m half way through “the woman who stole my life” by Marian Keyes! She is awesome I love reading her books 🙂

  49. I find lonely planet guides or similar for my destination very handy to get the most out of my holiday.

  51. I will be reading Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee, I am really excited and can’t wait to buy the book when it’s released next week.

  52. “Leaving Home” by Jodi Picoult. I met this dynamic author at a book signing. Her enthusiasm and observation of life makes me look forward to read about the elephants! This will be followed by any other book, usually involving some moral issues, by the same author.

  53. The time of my Life by Cecelia Ahern – all of her books are brilliant and I have just purchased this book of hers.

I cant wait to start it….

  54. It’s the only time I get to read! I know a lot of people see flying as a prelude to the holiday, for me it’s a chance to be brought food and drink and sink into a book for hours!!!

  55. ESSENTAL READING FOR ME IS ARDENNES BY ANTONY BEEVOR BECAUSE MY DAD WAS INVOLVED (HE LIVED,TO PASS AWAY IN 2007,AGED 93). Please enter me in the £350 prize draw;many thanks.

  56. I am looking forward to reading The Last Roundhead by Jemahl Evans. It’s a Flashman style fictional memoir of Blandford Candy and his exploits in the first English Civil War in 1642. There’re are some good reviews online.

  57. Enjoyable survey, be nice to win as I could do with a new book to read

  58. To keep the weight down when flying although when at home I prefer reading real books I now use an eReader ( a Nook) when travelling. I like to take a large selection of books. This year I read 4 of the Terry Pratchett Disc World Series, The Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch, Aldie the Doorstep cat by Rachel Wells, and Metamorphosis by Kafka. Am now about to re read Pride and Prejudice.

  59. My chance to read my choice of: ‘Mindfulness: a practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world’, on trains and planes, if I’m lucky. Found this fantastic competition idea by chance, and it is the only way I will find time to read and slow down. Cheers!

  60. I’m planning on reading The Girl on the Train and Still Alice. I love reading, its the next best thing to my holiday. I love reading and getting engrossed and lost in another world.

  61. This summer it’s going to be Alan Turing – The Enigma. It’ll last a long time but looks absolutely fascinating

    1. I would like to read Martina Cole’s latest book ‘The Good Life’ on the beach. After finishing that, i would read a few good old Classics one more time.

    1. I’ll be reading a book set in the county I’m visiting-one of Anne Zouroudi’s books about a Greek detective-whimsical and atmospheric-The Feast of Artemis.

  62. Looking forward to getting into the new Louis de Bernieres on my trip at the end of the month. Magazine or two at the ready in case it’s a let down!

  63. I’ve found that a Lonely Planet guide for the country or region I’m going to has been worth buying. Some go out of date more quickly than others but I’ve always been impressed with the practical information in every guide.

  64. I am looking forward to ‘Middlesex’ by Jeffrey Eugenides. Might be a bit ambitious but hey, having the time to get into a great well-reviewed book is what holidays are for!
Can I also say at this point that, if ever I see that person off the beach who casually ripped out each page of their book as they read it (shock horror !!!) this time I will berate you…

  65. I’m reading ‘Jane and Prudence’ by Barbara Pym, said to be one of the most underrated authors of our time. Her books have wit, depth, and charm, written in a way that takes one far off into a fictional world of colourful characters while at the same time putting words to the experiences of British everyday life and culture. A friend lent her copy of the book to me and it has turned out to be a wonderful holiday read!

  66. Interesting survey.
I will be reading The Bronze Horseman as it was recommended on Goodreads.

  67. I would love the chance/luxury to read a book on holiday but with three kids I`d be lucky to read a pamphlet before being harassed!!

  68. I’ll be reading the Arthur series by Bernard Cornwell, The Sunrise by Victoria Hislop and probably a couple of others…

  69. Think I’ll make In Motion: The Experience of Travel my next read. Seems appropriate re this survey.

  70. My reading list is endless for my forthcoming trip and I will definetly read ‘The last empress: Madame Chiang Kai-Shek and the birth of modern China’

  71. I read as many and as varied books as I can. I might have something I bring from home (an old favourite) or a book a family member or friend has leant me or I might also pick something else up at the airport or station which catches my eye. I will generally come back from a holiday with more books than I originally took. Currently I am reading ‘Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell’ and have CJ Sampson’s ‘Dominion’ lined up next

  72. I’m very good at starting books on holiday but it usually takes until my next holiday to finish them. My last 3 trips began and ended James Yorkston’s “It’s lovely to be here”, Defoe’s “Robinson Crusoe” and “True” by Michael Melius – one of the best things I’ve ever read – which I found in a hostel in Inverness. I love hostel/hotel book exchanges for finding unusual holiday literature. It’s just lucky for me that other travellers can finish their reading on the road!

  73. Catching up on an early Lee Child book about Jack Reacher that I missed: “Tripwire”. Will be a fast read, but fun.

  74. I am not a big reader, but holidays and whilst travelling are probably the times when I can really get into a good book. A good novel has thus far helped me while away the hours waiting for and aboard planes, trains and many other modes of transportation.

  75. I would like to read the girl on the train, love reading 🙂 still a book person not sure I will ever be converted!
    Great giveaway thank you!

  76. I love any good novels, as long as it is written well with complex characters that I can relate to, then I’m happy! I have a wish list as long as my arm but I am going to read The King’s Curse by Phillippa Gregory next.

  77. A big part of any of my holidays is to learn about the place or places I’m going – not just in a travel guide, but about the history and culture as well.
I feel it really enhances my trip, to be able to say, look at a building and know and appreciate the history of it.
I also like to theme my novels – like maybe reading one by an author from the place I’ll be staying. Or set there. It really keeps me in the mood to explore and go on adventures…
Haha I actually don’t know anyone else who does this, but oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  78. Having read and enjoyed “One Day” by David Nicholls, I would take his current offering, “Us”.

  79. I’ll be re-reading Tomorrow Never Knows by Eddie Robson. Am slightly biased because I’m its publisher but my word, I love it. Best beginning to a novel I’ve ever read.

  80. There’s nothing like a good book to switch off for a little while, transport you to another place and rest a busy mind. I try to read when on holiday and always feel a little lost when I finish a great book. I’m on the hunt now for this summers’ reading!

  81. great idea!!

I like reading in my trip during the summer holiday. The nicest time in a year, both the body and soul are on the way!

  82. Looking forward to the new Mark Billingham and Peter James detective novels set in London and Brighton.

  83. I download a whole selection of free Kindle books and work my way through them. Some are better than others, if they are not interesting/good enough, I simply remove from them from my Kindle and move on to the next. Book reading on a budget and a chance to discover new authors.

  84. I love reading, but as I do not have time to read a lot in my daily life, I always look forward to pick out some books that I have been wanting to read, as a special treat for my holidays.

  85. I will read whatever I find on my bookshelf! That’s what I would have liked as an option in the questionnaire.

  86. Anything by Lee Child! His story lines just draw you in and make you want to read on. Looking forward to reading his latest – Personal

  87. Perdido Street Station by China Mieville, it may not be a recent book but its a damm good read.

  88. I love an adventure novel or nice cheesy love story… something relaxing that will take me to another place while i soak up the sun!

  89. I’m planning on reading Perfect Pitch by Jon Steel. I just haven’t got round to reading it before. Jon Steel shares his secrets and explains how you can create presentations and pitches that win hearts, minds, and new business. So there won’t be a hero in a shining armour saving a princess but it will help me take some perspective on myself and enjoy the beach 🙂

  90. Thx Opodo.. I have traveles a lot in Europe From Brazil, buying my tickts in Opodo app… I am in Turkey now, and tryung to travel more around… Reading histories about the old histories from turkey and greece… Thx.

  91. Hopefully I’ll get to read some James Patterson books I haven’t read yet, Private India being one of them. And the Black Echo by Michael Connelly.

  92. i love to read fiction set it the place I am visiting, gives a whole new dimension to the holiday

  93. Night Train to Lisbon – Pascal Mercier. Chance to immerse myself in a favourite destination

  94. Opodo going up in my choices list when looking for a ticket ahahah. Great promo. Let´s read guys!

  95. Heading for the Finnish archipelago so how could i not bring Tove Jansson’s The Summer Book and the Winter Book for additional insight into these beautiful islands?

  96. ‘The Elephant to Hollywood’ by Michael Caine has been recommended to me a few times now and I plan to read it on my next trip… no doubt I’ll be reading it ‘in his voice’ too, hopefully not aloud though, just in my head!

  97. A book that fully immerses you and transports you ‘somewhere else’ wins hands down!

  98. I am just in the middle of reading Shantaram – which is a fantastic book. It also makes me nostalgic for India, where I have recently travelled! Looking forward to reading Gregory David Roberts new novel The Mountain Shadow when it comes out in October!

  99. I’ll be reading anything that feeds my wanderlust. Food, photography & off the beaten track!!

  100. Why Opodo is assuming that only very contemporary reading is suitable for holidays? The suggested reading list does not include a single classic work. At least there is a line where you can add your only title. I hope that many people will use it like myself because I will be reading The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy. Very worthy indeed!

  101. Next for me is ‘Less Than Zero’ by Bret Easton Ellis.
Hopefully I’ll be reading it on my way to Spain!

  102. I love to read on holidays- it’s the only time I ever feel completely relaxed and able to pick up my book and totally immerse myself in the pages. There’s nothing better than sitting on the beach in the sun with a cheeky cocktail reading a travel guide and planning my next Getaway!

  103. My family has recommended Where’d you go, Bernadette by Maria Semple and that’s my must-read this summer 🙂

  104. I will be reading Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel on the plane to Tenerife. I am going to see my lovely Dad. I usually enjoy being transported to another literary world, (but maybe not that world, as I don’t want the chop!)

  105. I will be reading Alek- Sudanese refugee to international supermodel and last month Real Simple magazine.

  106. I will be reading selection of magazines and the book I will be reading again on holiday is ‘The secret ‘ by Rhonda Byrne

  107. I will be reading “The Dance of the Seagull” by Andrea Camilleri. I love reading about exploits of Salvo Montalbano, and hopefully will get to travel to Sicily to see some of the places the TV crime series was filmed!

  108. Love to have something to read at hand if going away. Mostly magazines and factual books.

  109. I usually enjoy historical fiction, but this year I expect to be reading Predator by Patricia Cornwall

  110. I don’t read many books, except on holiday. Then I generally read one or two – usually by Thomas Hardy (or otherwise non-fiction)

  111. “The girl on the train” is something I am looking forward to reading during the simmer holidays

  112. I don’t have the patience or the time to read books. I do like to read the local newspapers while I’m abroad though as it helps when learning a foreign language.

  113. Hello, I don’t feel quite comfortable about the way I was lead to leave a comment here. The promotional email I received did not mention leaving a comment on a blog post to take part in the prize draw. Isn’t that a bit cheeky? Or even a tad dishonest in commercial terms?

    1. Hi! In order to enter our prize draw, we need your personal information (just incase you win) and the best way to get this information was by asking for our users to leave a comment with their names and email. It’s explained at the end of the survey and you can read our terms & conditions 🙂 You can have a look here: https://blog.opodo.co.uk/travel-book-survey/2/ Hope this info helps!

  114. Good article. Got me thinking about how much I love reading on holiday. I had not heard of some of the books mentioned so I will now check these out for my next holiday read 🙂

  115. The Hobbit, J R R Tolkien. A great read and good enough to be deeply absorbed in, to the extent that one no longer notices the screaming babies and noisy kids, in addition to the drunken men that check in late and have to shout to each other as they sit 15 rows apart. A good book helps one to relax during a flight but can’t do anything for those that use low budget airlines due to the excessive noise adding to the seriously cramped conditions that Easyjet and others carefully provide for their passengers. I shouldn’t have said that, Easyjet will now charge an extra £5 for the noise, £10 for an extra 5mm of leg room and an extra £5 to sit next to somebody that vomits on their heavily overpriced refreshments (£10 if you have the pleasure of smelling the vomit for at least 70% of the flight).

  116. once read Ulysses by James Joyce on holiday, that was hard going. Might stick to some Jo Nesbo…

  117. It’s nice to be able to read without feeling there is something else I should be doing, like I do at home.

  118. Holidays are a great time to plan the next one! Best reading material is a travel magazine: Wanderlust, Lonely Planet or NatGeo Traveler.

  119. I was a bit disappointed that you could only choose one answer per question as I certainly use both paper books and digital. The things I love about using my tablet to read are: built in light (very useful); not carrying bulky books if travelling by public transport is so handy; if you finish a book you can just download another one.

  120. “Map and Compass” – this book would teach me how to navigate while walking in the great outdoors. Hope that I would not get lost again in Austrian mountain again!

  121. I will read Tommy’s Peace, a companion to Tommy’s War, about the experiences of a man who lived in my neighbourhood in the early 20th Century.

  122. I know exactly what I’m taking with me and what I’m reading in the hotel room and on the beach: Funny Girl, by Nick Hornby and The Slaughter Man by Tony Parson. I love these two authors and follow up with anything new that publish. Great initiative, thank you.

  123. For me it depends on the type of holiday – I can read 3 books in a week’s beach holiday, but I won’t read any on a city break.

  124. I love that i bought myself a kindle. J can read anytime and anywhere when im on holidays! Just came back from mykonos ans finished a book – the girl with the dragon tattoo on the beach and room balcony!

  125. Can easily get through at least 7 books on a two week holiday. Pure and uninterrupted relaxation.

  126. About time a book survey for travellers yippee !! Maybe now we will see more choice at airports???

  127. Good survey!

I’ll be reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Not watched the film which I hear is very good but the book is even better!

    Sham

  128. Great to read on holiday, at least 6 books my only chance of the year to just sit and enjoy

  129. Well my holiday is never long enough to Read the books I like.. Ludlum.. Sienkiewicz, Archer, Harris..Would be lovely.. I can’t wait. 😉

  130. Usually the LP, Rough Guide or Bradt for my destination, whichever is most recently published. Often accompanied by a novel set in said destination. My favourite in recent years was Tahmima Anam’s “A Golden Age” in Bangladesh.

  131. Holidays are the only time I can let my mind go and get completely engrossed in a book! The £350 would allow my mind and I more time to relax and enjoy the world and all its literature so….fingers crossed!

  132. Guidebooks for where I’m actually travelling. Won’t be during the summer but later in the year, most likely SE Asia. So Lonely Planet, Rouh Guide, Footprint etc for the country, whichever looks best.

  133. I mostly prefer reading actual books but now I’m coming around to the idea of getting a tablet. Means I can carry more types of books without the excess luggage!

  134. Can easily read a book in a day when I have the time for complete relaxation. Becoming more old skool, bought a kindle but still prefer the real thing 🙂

  135. I love a good book, one that really makes me want to read more, ‘The Girl On the Train by Paula Hawkins’ is what id like to read next.

  136. I will be reading 1000 foods to eat before you die by Mimi Sheraton. I love food and travel and this book combines both!

  137. This is a great promo. I hope I will be lucky enough to win the voucher and get reading in flight!
