I treat myself to something I’ve wanted for a while in the airport bookshop but I also fill my case with books bought at charity shops before I travel – and leave them for others to enjoy rather than bring them home

I’m reading Muddy boots and Silk Stockings by Julia Stoneham, set in 1943 England.
I like to take a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. This year I have Donna Tart’s “The Goldfish”, David Nicholls “Us” and Karen Joy Fowler’s “We are all completely beside ourselves” downloaded on the Kindle and am looking for my non-fiction – a couple of biographies would be good.

I recommend reading novels that are set in the country that you’re visiting. It helps set the scene and can give a great insite into the country. e.g. Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy while in India, or Carlos Ruiz Zafron’s Shadow of the Wind while in Barcelona.

To keep the weight down when flying although when at home I prefer reading real books I now use an eReader ( a Nook) when travelling. I like to take a large selection of books. This year I read 4 of the Terry Pratchett Disc World Series, The Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch, Aldie the Doorstep cat by Rachel Wells, and Metamorphosis by Kafka. Am now about to re read Pride and Prejudice.
I like biographies or something about Sunderland afc.

I’m reading ‘Jane and Prudence’ by Barbara Pym, said to be one of the most underrated authors of our time. Her books have wit, depth, and charm, written in a way that takes one far off into a fictional world of colourful characters while at the same time putting words to the experiences of British everyday life and culture. A friend lent her copy of the book to me and it has turned out to be a wonderful holiday read!

Faithless by Karin Slaughter
I’m very good at starting books on holiday but it usually takes until my next holiday to finish them. My last 3 trips began and ended James Yorkston’s “It’s lovely to be here”, Defoe’s “Robinson Crusoe” and “True” by Michael Melius – one of the best things I’ve ever read – which I found in a hostel in Inverness. I love hostel/hotel book exchanges for finding unusual holiday literature. It’s just lucky for me that other travellers can finish their reading on the road!

I love any good novels, as long as it is written well with complex characters that I can relate to, then I’m happy! I have a wish list as long as my arm but I am going to read The King’s Curse by Phillippa Gregory next.
A big part of any of my holidays is to learn about the place or places I’m going – not just in a travel guide, but about the history and culture as well.
I feel it really enhances my trip, to be able to say, look at a building and know and appreciate the history of it.
I also like to theme my novels – like maybe reading one by an author from the place I’ll be staying. Or set there. It really keeps me in the mood to explore and go on adventures…

I download a whole selection of free Kindle books and work my way through them. Some are better than others, if they are not interesting/good enough, I simply remove from them from my Kindle and move on to the next. Book reading on a budget and a chance to discover new authors.
I love reading, but as I do not have time to read a lot in my daily life, I always look forward to pick out some books that I have been wanting to read, as a special treat for my holidays.

‘The Elephant to Hollywood’ by Michael Caine has been recommended to me a few times now and I plan to read it on my next trip… no doubt I’ll be reading it ‘in his voice’ too, hopefully not aloud though, just in my head!

I am just in the middle of reading Shantaram – which is a fantastic book. It also makes me nostalgic for India, where I have recently travelled! Looking forward to reading Gregory David Roberts new novel The Mountain Shadow when it comes out in October!

Why Opodo is assuming that only very contemporary reading is suitable for holidays? The suggested reading list does not include a single classic work. At least there is a line where you can add your only title. I hope that many people will use it like myself because I will be reading The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy. Very worthy indeed!
Next for me is ‘Less Than Zero’ by Bret Easton Ellis.
Hopefully I’ll be reading it on my way to Spain!

I love to read on holidays- it’s the only time I ever feel completely relaxed and able to pick up my book and totally immerse myself in the pages. There’s nothing better than sitting on the beach in the sun with a cheeky cocktail reading a travel guide and planning my next Getaway!

I will be reading Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel on the plane to Tenerife. I am going to see my lovely Dad. I usually enjoy being transported to another literary world, (but maybe not that world, as I don’t want the chop!)

The Hobbit, J R R Tolkien… Always a good read when travelling 🙂
The Hobbit, J R R Tolkien. A great read and good enough to be deeply absorbed in, to the extent that one no longer notices the screaming babies and noisy kids, in addition to the drunken men that check in late and have to shout to each other as they sit 15 rows apart. A good book helps one to relax during a flight but can’t do anything for those that use low budget airlines due to the excessive noise adding to the seriously cramped conditions that Easyjet and others carefully provide for their passengers. I shouldn’t have said that, Easyjet will now charge an extra £5 for the noise, £10 for an extra 5mm of leg room and an extra £5 to sit next to somebody that vomits on their heavily overpriced refreshments (£10 if you have the pleasure of smelling the vomit for at least 70% of the flight).

The things I love about using my tablet to read are: built in light (very useful); not carrying bulky books if travelling by public transport is so handy; if you finish a book you can just download another one.

I know exactly what I’m taking with me and what I’m reading in the hotel room and on the beach: Funny Girl, by Nick Hornby and The Slaughter Man by Tony Parson. I love these two authors and follow up with anything new that publish. Great initiative, thank you.
For me it depends on the type of holiday – I can read 3 books in a week’s beach holiday, but I won’t read any on a city break.
I love that i bought myself a kindle. J can read anytime and anywhere when im on holidays! Just came back from mykonos ans finished a book – the girl with the dragon tattoo on the beach and room balcony!

Can easily get through at least 7 books on a two week holiday. Pure and uninterrupted relaxation.
I like to read romantic fiction on holiday as it is easy to pick up and put down.

Usually the LP, Rough Guide or Bradt for my destination, whichever is most recently published. Often accompanied by a novel set in said destination. My favourite in recent years was Tahmima Anam’s “A Golden Age” in Bangladesh.

Guidebooks for where I’m actually travelling. Won’t be during the summer but later in the year, most likely SE Asia. So Lonely Planet, Rouh Guide, Footprint etc for the country, whichever looks best.
I mostly prefer reading actual books but now I’m coming around to the idea of getting a tablet. Means I can carry more types of books without the excess luggage!
Can easily read a book in a day when I have the time for complete relaxation. Becoming more old skool, bought a kindle but still prefer the real thing 🙂
